Thinking about hopping on Route 2 and heading out of town for your next date night? Treat your significant other to an adventure in Vermilion instead! For residents and visitors alike, Vermilion offers opportunities for everyone to enjoy themselves. If you want to make a whole day of it, here are a few suggestions for treating that someone special to a day or night on the town.
If you have a few hours in the midmorning, rent a paddleboat, kayak, or canoe and spend the first part of your day exploring the river – and if you’re really adventurous, you can even venture out onto the lake. Or, if you’re looking for something a little more relaxed, try something as simple as a morning walk or bike ride together. Whether a stroll downtown, a walk on the beach, or venturing through the paths at Mill Hollow, it can be nice to just spend some time away from the business of home to reconnect with your person.
After working up your appetite, get ready for a low maintenance lunch. Almost every restaurant in town has the option for carryout – plan a picnic! Order your favorite meal to-go, pack a blanket or your comfiest lawn chairs and set up your lunch in the shadow of the lighthouse. There’s nothing better than just sitting and watching the boats on the shoreline, the waves crashing on the shore, and people enjoying the sunshine. It’s the perfect backdrop for a nice picture of the two of you.
Dinner is another great option for spending time with your loved one. Dress up for no reason (really, do that!) Pick anywhere downtown for a nice sit-down meal and try somewhere you haven’t been before, or grab one of the Main Street Vermilion “Hungry” brochures, close your eyes, wave your finger and point, Whichever restaurant it lands on is where you go! If you think you’ve been everywhere, go to your favorite restaurant and pick something you’ve never tried before (or if you really trust your partner, try ordering for each other).
After dinner, there’s dessert and not much is better than ice cream? In every direction from the center of town, there’s soft serve and packed ice cream, shakes, sundaes and more—endless and delicious options for satisfying your sweet tooth.
Get a cone and take a walk along Main Street Beach, all the way to the end of the pier. Maneuver the uneven rocks together, then take a minute to congratulate yourselves for making it all the way by sitting on the large square base of the red navigational aide. If you time it right, this is also a perfect place to watch the sun go down.
If you find yourself exhausted from the other activities of the day, many of the restaurants downtown have beautiful outdoor patios – enjoy great live music, grab some chips or mozzarella sticks, and sit, relax, and enjoy each other’s company as you wrap up your day.
Don’t cram all of this into one day. Spread it out throughout the summer, come up with your own ideas, and cater to you and your partner’s interests. Experience your community with someone you care about. Whether you’ve been married for fifty years, or aren’t sure whether you’ve been dating long enough to call them your “boyfriend” or “girlfriend,” take the opportunity to explore Vermilion as you’re planning your next evening out.
