Vermilion baseball dominates winning four out of five games in one week

After the Vermilion Sailors 3-0 victory over the Huron Tigers, Coach Jeff Keck gave former Vermilion baseball coach Gene Nickley a baseball signed by the varsity team.

The Sailors varsity baseball defeated Margaretta 10-4 in SBC contest on Wednesday, April 12. The Sailors pounded out 10 hits and scored 10 runs in the 10-4 win. Mason Montgomery was the winning pitcher with relief help from Evan Ozmun. Both pitchers struck out 3 batters. Cromer took the loss for Margaretta. Mason Montgomery had three hits and scored three runs while Ridge Clark had two hits. Nik Barkdull, Tristan Mayer, and Reese Miller each had a hit and two RBI’s. Nick Ragnoni and Bryce Fisher each had one hit. J. Luma and Graffin had three hits each for the Polar Bears and Esposito had two hits.

On Friday, April 14, the Sailors lost to Perkins 5-4 in extra innings. Ridge Clark led the Sailors in hitting with three hits and two RBI’s. Mason Montgomery had two hits while Nik Barkdull and Bryce Fisher each had one hit and one RBI. Nick Ragnoni, Tristen Mayer Reese Miller, Jake Horvath, Joby Pfeil, and Sterling Benko each had hits for the Sailors.

Despite the frustrating loss, they showed up to win in a double header against Brookside High School on Saturday, April 15. The Sailors won the first game 5-0. Ridge Clark got his first varsity pitching win as he threw a one hit shutout while striking out eight batters. Mason Montgomery and Reese Miller each had two hits for the Sailors. Jake Horvath and Sterling Benko each had one hit. Jake Fields had the only hit for Brookside and Rozane took the loss on the mound for the Cardinals.

The Sailors won game two by a 5-1 score. Max Walker got his first varsity pitching win as he threw a two hitter and did not yield an earned run. Walker struck out eight Cardinal batters. Nick Ragnoni and Tristan Mayer each had two hits for the Sailors in game two while Reese Miller and Ridge Clark each had key RBI hits for the Sailors. Williams and Fortney had the two Brookside hits and Thompson took the loss on the mound for the Cardinals.

They continued their winning streak Monday, April 17, beating the Huron Tigers 3-0. Nik Barkdull threw a one hit shutout and struck out 10 Tiger batters as he lifted his record to 4-0 on the mound. Barkdull also had an RBI double. Tristan Mayer had two hits and an RBI and Nick Ragnoni had a hit and RBI. Ridge Clark, Mason Montgomery, and Jacob Horvath also had hits for the Sailors. Jarod Hohler had the only hit for Huron and also took the loss on the mound for the Tigers. The Sailors are now 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the Sandusky Bay Conference.
